How to Clear Calculator History & Screen on TI-84 Plus & CE
The TI-84 Plus CE allows you to scroll up to review previous calculations. Learn how to quickly clear the visible screen or completely erase your calculation scrollback history before tests.
Step-by-step
Clear Visible Screen Only
Press:CLEAR
Press the 'CLEAR' button once to clear the current line. Press 'CLEAR' a second time to blank the entire visible display.
Tip: Even after clearing the screen, previous answers can still be viewed by pressing the Up Arrow key on MathPrint models.
Recall or Reuse Previous History
Press:▲ENTER
Use the Up Arrow key to navigate into previous calculations. Highlight any past equation or answer, press ENTER and it will be pasted directly into your active calculation line for editing.
Tip: You can also press [2nd] + [ENTER] (ENTRY) to recall the immediate previous command.
Clear Scrollback History Completely
Press:2nd+ (MEM)7: Reset1: All RAM2: Reset
To completely wipe all previous history from memory so nobody can scroll up to see previous calculations, perform a fast RAM reset: press [2nd] + [+], choose '7: Reset...', select '1: All RAM' and confirm with '2: Reset'.
Tip: This also resets temporary variables while preserving installed apps and archived programs.
Clear List Data Safely Without Deleting Columns
Press:STAT1: Edit...Highlight HeaderCLEARENTER
To clear spreadsheet data in L1 or L2, press [STAT] → 1: Edit... Use the arrow keys to scroll UP so the column header 'L1' is highlighted. Press [CLEAR], then press [ENTER].
Tip: CRITICAL: NEVER press [DEL] on a list header. Pressing DEL deletes the column entirely from the screen!
| Target to Clear | Keystrokes / Shortcut | Effect on Calculator | Recovery Option |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current Active Line | [CLEAR] | Erases the equation or numbers currently being typed | Retype expression |
| Visible Home Screen | Press [CLEAR] twice | Blanks the visible display area for a clean workspace | Press [▲] Up Arrow to scroll back into past history |
| Past Scrollback Buffer | [2nd] + [+] → 7: Reset → 1: All RAM → 2: Reset | Completely purges all past calculations and results from memory | None (permanent memory wipe) |
| Y= Graph Equations | [Y=] → highlight line → [CLEAR] | Deletes selected equation function (e.g. Y1) | Retype equation in Y= |
| Spreadsheet List (L1/L2) | [STAT] → 1: Edit → highlight column header → [CLEAR] → [ENTER] | Empties all numbers in the column without deleting the column | Retype dataset values |
| Stored Variables (A-Z) | [2nd] + [+] → 2: Mem Mgmt/Delete → 2: Real... → [DEL] | Deletes a stored letter variable (handheld only — not simulated here) | Re-assign variable (e.g. 0 → A) |
Common mistakes
- Assuming pressing CLEAR once deletes the history buffer (it only hides it; pressing Up Arrow reveals past history).
- Pressing the [DEL] key on list headers like L1, which deletes the column instead of clearing its values.
- Confusing clearing the home screen with clearing stored equations in the Y= menu.
- Not knowing that test proctors can scroll up through previous calculations if RAM is not reset.
Frequently asked questions
Can teachers or test proctors see what I calculated before entering the room?
Yes, if they press the Up Arrow on your TI-84 Plus CE, they can scroll through recent calculations. To ensure full privacy and test compliance, perform a quick RAM reset ([2nd] + [+] → 7 → 1 → 2) before walking into an exam.
How do I delete a single previous line from calculation history on TI-84 Plus CE?
Use the Up Arrow key to scroll up into history until the specific equation or answer is highlighted, then press the [DEL] key. That specific line is deleted from the scrollback buffer while the others stay. This works on the handheld; in the simulator, CLEAR clears the screen instead.
How do I paste an earlier calculation answer into my current math problem?
Press the Up Arrow key to highlight the earlier answer, then press ENTER. The value will immediately paste into your current cursor position. You can also press [2nd] + [(-)] to insert 'Ans' (the most recent answer).
Why won't the CLEAR button erase my graph?
The CLEAR button only affects the home calculation screen and text input lines. To clear a graph, you must open the [Y=] editor, scroll to the equation you want to remove and press [CLEAR] on that line.
