How to Turn Off a TI-84 Plus CE Calculator & Battery Care

Unlike smartphones or tablets, the TI-84 does not have a dedicated off button. You must use a secondary function key to power down cleanly and preserve battery life.

Follow along on the calculator

The keystrokes below work in the simulator, except where a step says it describes the handheld only.

Open the calculator →

Step-by-step

Press 2nd then ON

Press:2ndON

Press the blue '2nd' key in the upper left, then press the 'ON' key in the bottom left corner (notice 'OFF' printed above ON in blue silkscreen).

Tip: Do not hold both keys down at the same time. Press 2nd, release it and press ON.

Automatic Power Down (APD)

Press:Wait a few minutes

If you forget to turn your TI-84 off, Automatic Power Down (APD) switches it off by itself after a few minutes of inactivity — about three or four on most models. Nothing is lost: your equations, lists and variables are all kept.

Charging Cables: Micro-USB vs. Mini-USB

Press:Micro-USB or Mini-USB5V Wall Charger

Check the port before buying a cable: the colour-screen TI-84 Plus CE charges over USB (most units use a mini-B port, so compare the plug shape), while older monochrome TI-84 Plus models run on 4 AAA batteries. Charge from a standard 5V phone-style adapter rather than a low-power hub.

Tip: A full charge takes roughly four hours and typically lasts a few weeks of normal classroom use.

Battery Maintenance & Summer Storage

Press:Charge every 2 months

If storing your calculator over summer break, charge it to at least 50-80% before putting it away. Lithium-ion batteries can permanently degrade if left at 0% for several months.

Hard Reset & Fixing the 'Validating OS...' Boot Loop

Press:Paperclip Pinhole Reset

If your TI-84 Plus CE screen gets frozen on 'Validating OS...' or refuses to power down, the lithium battery has likely experienced a voltage sag below the OS cryptographic checksum threshold. Plug into a 5V wall charger for 20 minutes, then insert an unbent paperclip into the small reset pinhole on the back casing for 2 seconds. The calculator will reboot cleanly without erasing archived applications.

Tip: If you ever need to clear memory before a test, follow our guide on [how to reset a TI-84 calculator](/guides/how-to-reset-ti-84-calculator).

Common mistakes

  • Pressing ON alone (which simply clears error prompts or keeps the screen awake).
  • Holding both 2nd and ON at the exact same millisecond instead of pressing 2nd first, releasing, then ON.
  • Leaving a rechargeable TI-84 Plus CE completely drained for months, causing the lithium cell to enter deep discharge sleep.
  • Using a passive computer USB hub that fails to supply sufficient charging current.

Frequently asked questions

Does turning off the TI-84 delete my equations or work?

No! All variables, equations in Y=, statistical lists and window settings remain fully preserved in non-volatile memory when turned off.

Why is my TI-84 Plus CE stuck on 'Validating OS...'?

The 'Validating OS...' boot loop is triggered when the rechargeable lithium-ion battery voltage drops below 3.4V, preventing the hardware cryptographic check from finishing. Connect the calculator to a dedicated 5V wall outlet for 20 to 30 minutes, then press the recessed paperclip reset button on the back casing.

Why won't my TI-84 Plus CE turn on even when plugged in?

If the battery was completely drained to 0%, the calculator may need to charge for 15 to 30 minutes before having enough power to turn on the screen. If it still doesn't turn on, press the paperclip reset button on the back while plugged in.

How long does a full charge last on the TI-84 Plus CE?

With normal classroom use — an hour or two of maths a day — a full charge typically lasts a few weeks. Games and full screen brightness drain it much faster, so charge it the night before an exam rather than relying on the last charge.
