How to Do Fractions & Mixed Numbers on TI-84 Plus CE

The TI-84 Plus CE — and older models running OS 2.55 or later — can show fractions stacked, numerator over denominator, instead of slash notation.

Follow along on the calculator

The keystrokes below work in the simulator, except where a step says it describes the handheld only.

Step-by-step

Access the Quick Fraction Shortcut

Press:ALPHAY= (F1)

Press the green 'ALPHA' key, then press 'Y=' at the top left to open the FRAC shortcut menu.

Tip: Option '1: n/d' inserts a stacked fraction template. Option '2: Un/d' inserts a mixed number template.

Enter Numerator and Denominator

Press:3▼4

Type the top number (e.g. 3), press the Down Arrow to jump into the denominator and type the bottom number (e.g. 4). Press the Right Arrow to step outside the fraction.

Convert Between Fraction and Decimal

Press:MATH1: ▶FracENTER

To convert any decimal answer into its simplest exact fraction, press 'MATH', select '1: ▶Frac' and press ENTER.

Working with Mixed Numbers

Press:ALPHAY= (F1)2: Un/d

To enter a mixed number like 2¾, press [ALPHA] + [Y=], select '2: Un/d', enter the integer whole number (2), arrow right to numerator (3), arrow down to denominator (4) and arrow right to step out.

Tip: To convert an improper fraction to a mixed number, select option '3: ▶n/d ◀▶ Un/d'.

Classic Division Slash Method (For Older Models)

Press:(1+2)÷(3+4)

If using an older monochrome TI-84 without MathPrint, you must use parentheses around multi-term expressions: (1+2)/(3+4). Without parentheses, the calculator evaluates 1 + (2/3) + 4 due to order of operations.

Tip: Update older calculators to OS 2.55 to unlock MathPrint fraction templates.

Common mistakes

  • Typing a slash '/' without parentheses around multi-term numerators or denominators: 1+2/3+4 evaluates as 1 + (2/3) + 4 = 5.67 instead of (1+2)/(3+4) = 3/7.
  • Not pressing Right Arrow to exit the denominator before adding another term.
  • Using a calculator running outdated firmware (< OS 2.55) that lacks MathPrint shortcut palettes.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't ALPHA + Y= open the fraction menu on my TI-84?

The ALPHA + Y= shortcut requires MathPrint OS version 2.55 or higher. If pressing ALPHA + Y= does nothing, update your calculator's operating system via TI Connect CE, or enter fractions using parentheses and the division key: (a/b).

How do I convert an improper fraction like 17/5 into a mixed number?

In the [ALPHA] + [Y=] menu, select option '3: ▶n/d ◀▶ Un/d' and press ENTER. The calculator will immediately convert 17/5 into 3⅖.

Can the TI-84 simplify fractions with variables?

No. The TI-84 is a numerical graphing calculator, not a Computer Algebra System (CAS). It will evaluate fractions with variables only if numeric values have already been stored in those variables.

How do I enter negative fractions on a TI-84?

Always use the negative sign [(-)] at the bottom next to ENTER, NOT the minus operator [-]. Type [(-)] inside the numerator, or place it right before the fraction template.
