How to Reset a TI-84 Calculator (RAM vs All Memory vs Defaults)

Resetting your TI-84 calculator clears stored variables, temporary RAM errors and returns modes back to default. It is often required before standardized tests (SAT, ACT, AP exams) and clears most freezes, stuck loops and leftover settings.

Follow along on the calculator

The keystrokes below work in the simulator, except where a step says it describes the handheld only.

Open the calculator →

Step-by-step

Access the Memory Management Menu

Press:2nd+ (MEM)

Press the blue '2nd' button in the upper left corner, then press the '+' key located next to the ENTER key to open the Memory menu.

Tip: Notice the yellow or blue 'MEM' printed above the '+' key.

Select the Reset Option

Press:7

Press '7' on the keypad or scroll down using the arrow keys to highlight '7: Reset...' and press ENTER.

Choose RAM, Defaults, or All Memory

Press:1or2or▶ ALL

To fix a frozen calculator while keeping saved programs, select '1: All RAM'. To restore factory modes without deleting programs, select '2: Defaults'. To wipe everything for a standardized exam, arrow right to 'ALL' and select '1: All Memory'.

Tip: Standardized test proctors usually require 'All Memory' or 'Reset All RAM'.

Confirm the Reset

Press:2: Reset

Press '2' to confirm 'Reset'. You will see the confirmation screen: 'RAM Cleared' or 'Memory Cleared'.

Emergency Hardware Paperclip Reset (For Frozen Screens)

Press:Pinhole Button on Back

If your TI-84 Plus CE screen is completely frozen and keys do not respond, locate the small circular pinhole on the back casing. Unbend a paperclip and press the recessed button for 2 seconds. The screen will blink and reboot into the home screen safely.

Tip: On older monochrome TI-84 models, remove one AAA battery, hold down the [DEL] key for 10 seconds and reinsert the battery while still holding [DEL].

Reconfigure Angle Mode and Diagnostics Post-Reset

Press:MODESelect DEGREE2nd + 0 (CATALOG) -> DiagnosticOn

Remember that resetting your calculator automatically reverts your angle mode to RADIAN. If you are taking geometry or physics, press [MODE], highlight 'DEGREE' and press ENTER. Also turn on Stat Diagnostics via [2nd] + [0] (CATALOG) → DiagnosticOn to see 'r' and 'r²' in linear regressions.

Tip: Failing to check Degree/Radian mode after a reset is the #1 reason students lose points on trigonometry tests.

Common mistakes

  • Wiping 'All Memory' before a major exam without backing up crucial study programs to a computer via TI Connect CE.
  • Forgetting that a reset returns the calculator to RADIAN mode; geometry and physics tests require DEGREE mode.
  • Pressing the ON button instead of confirming Reset on option 2 (which aborts the reset).
  • Leaving Stat Diagnostics turned OFF after reset, causing correlation coefficients 'r' and 'r²' to disappear in LinReg.
  • Confusing clearing the home screen (via CLEAR) with resetting RAM.

Frequently asked questions

Does resetting a TI-84 delete installed apps?

Resetting 'All RAM' does not delete Flash Apps or the operating system. Resetting 'All Memory' clears user-archived programs and data, but Texas Instruments factory operating systems and pre-installed core apps remain permanently stored in protected ROM.

How do I reset my TI-84 if it is completely frozen and buttons do not work?

On a TI-84 Plus CE, press the small recessed reset button on the back casing using an unbent paperclip for 2 seconds. On older monochrome TI-84 Plus models, remove one AAA battery, hold down the [DEL] key for 10 seconds and reinstall the battery while holding [DEL].

How do I take my TI-84 out of Press-to-Test / Exam Mode?

To exit Press-to-Test mode, connect your TI-84 to another TI-84 using the mini-USB unit-to-unit cable. On the unlocked calculator, go to [2nd] + [+] (MEM) → Send → select any file and send it. Receiving any file immediately unlocks the calculator from Test Mode. Alternatively, connect it to your computer and launch TI Connect CE.

Why did my lists L1 and L2 disappear after a reset and how do I restore them?

Lists L1 through L6 are never truly deleted. If they vanish from your STAT screen, press [STAT], choose '5: SetUpEditor' and press ENTER. When 'Done' appears, reopen [STAT] → 1: Edit... and all 6 standard columns will be restored.

Will resetting my calculator improve its battery life or speed?

Only in one specific case: if a program was stuck in a loop, resetting stops it and the battery lasts normally again. A reset does not make a healthy calculator faster or its battery last longer.
