How to Exit Press-to-Test Mode on TI-84 Plus & CE (Step-by-Step)

Press-to-Test (TestGuard) is Texas Instruments' built-in security feature designed to lock out custom programs, apps and stored notes during standardized testing (SAT, ACT, AP and state exams). When active, an LED on the top edge of the calculator blinks or stays illuminated and accessing [PRGM] or [APPS] displays 'Exam Mode Active'. Because Texas Instruments intentionally designed Press-to-Test so it cannot be disabled using simple keypad shortcuts on the device alone, students frequently get stuck after test day. This guide covers the two official methods to safely exit Press-to-Test and restore your calculator.

Follow along on the calculator

The keystrokes below work in the simulator, except where a step says it describes the handheld only.

Step-by-step

Check If Press-to-Test Mode Is Active

Press:PRGM

Check that the calculator really is in Press-to-Test mode: the status LED on the top edge blinks while exam mode is active, and opening [PRGM] or [APPS] shows that programs are disabled instead of listing them.

Tip: A blinking LED simply means exam mode is on; the exact colour depends on the restrictions chosen when it was enabled.

Method 1: Two-Calculator Link (Fastest)

Press:2ndX,T,θ,n (LINK)

Connect your stuck calculator to any unlocked TI-84 Plus or CE using a mini-USB to mini-USB cable. On the UNLOCKED calculator, press [2nd] + [X,T,θ,n] to open the LINK menu. Select '4: List...' or any small variable (such as list L1), choose '1: Transmit' and press [ENTER]. The locked calculator detects the transfer, leaves Press-to-Test and re-enables your programs.

Tip: The sent file does not need to contain any data; any small variable triggers the automatic unlock.

Method 2: Connect to a Computer via TI Connect CE

If you don't have access to a second calculator, download and open the free 'TI Connect CE' software on your PC or Mac. Plug your calculator in via standard USB cable. In the TI Connect CE window, select the 'Calculator Explorer' tab on the left sidebar.

Tip: TI Connect CE is available free directly from the official Texas Instruments education portal.

Click 'Quit Exam Mode' in TI Connect CE

With your calculator connected and recognized in the software, click the 'Actions' menu at the top of your computer screen, then select 'Quit Exam Mode'. The software will send an unlock packet to the calculator. Your calculator screen will briefly display 'Re-enabling Programs' and reboot into normal mode.

Verify That All Programs and Apps Are Restored

Press:PRGMAPPS

Press [PRGM] to confirm that your program menu opens normally without restrictions. Press [APPS] to verify that applications such as Cabri Jr., CelSheet and Periodic Table are accessible. The top LED indicator will permanently turn off.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to remove batteries to bypass Press-to-Test: battery removal does NOT clear exam mode because the state is stored in non-volatile flash ROM.
  • Pressing the back reset button repeatedly: hardware resets restart the CPU but intentionally keep Press-to-Test enabled to prevent classroom cheating.
  • Updating calculator OS while in Press-to-Test: always exit exam mode before initiating operating system upgrades.

Frequently asked questions

Can I exit Press-to-Test without another calculator or computer?

No. Texas Instruments specifically engineered Press-to-Test so that students cannot disable it during an exam using only the calculator's keyboard. You must either connect to another calculator or to a computer running TI Connect CE.

Does exiting Press-to-Test erase my programs?

No! When you entered Press-to-Test, your programs and variables were safely archived and hidden. Exiting Press-to-Test un-archives them and restores them exactly as they were before the exam.

Why is the LED on my TI-84 Plus CE flashing different colors?

A blinking LED means exam mode is still active; the colour reflects which restrictions were selected when Press-to-Test was switched on. Any blinking colour needs to be cleared using one of the methods above.

Is Press-to-Test required for the SAT and ACT?

For the SAT, standard memory clearing is usually sufficient, though some proctors use Press-to-Test. For the ACT, clearing RAM or enabling Press-to-Test is standard test security procedure.
